list #8: books i'm in the middle of reading right now (7 september 2004)

ever since college, i've been pretty illiterate. i haven't been able to finish reading anything. ever since i moved above a barnes and noble store i've probably started too many things. why can't i just start a book and then finish it?

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte

I read it in high school and hated it. I never re-read books, but for some reason the strange relationship between Catherine and Heathcliff has haunted mind for years. I used to hate it because it made no sense to me. Now it fascinates me for the same reason. (I'm now on page 143)

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams

The only books I've read more than once are The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (the prequel to The Restaurant at the End of the Universe). The series was funny enough in middle school that I decided to read them again. I swear that says a lot.(page 74)

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling

I'm only reading these because it's the American thing to do even though J.K. Rowling is ridiculously prejudiced concerning Yankees. I'm reading my sister-in-laws copy and I've had it ever since the movie came out. It's not just that I'm a slow reader. It's that I don't read. Anyway, I don't like submitting to the Potterbandwagon, so I'm making sure that my reading them goes on no bookstore or library record. This one is much better than the other two I've read. Rated F by Todd C. Noker

This book was written by Todd Nukem, the X96 radio personality. He super-plugged it on the air, which annoyed me, so I decided when I looked through it I wouldn't support him. Unfortunately, because the book takes place in Provo and makes plenty of inside jokes about the Wasatch Front and is actually kind of a fun read i actually bought it. (47)

Drawing Manga in Simple Steps by Ben Krefta

I need to get back into drawing. Was a guide to drawing manga a bad choice? Probably. At least this will be a change of pace and it's the closest I'll actually come to actually visiting Japan. (11)

Charlotte Sometimes by Penelope Farmer

My jailbait friend Naomi actually checked this book out shortly after the Cure show. She then went home and forgot it so I picked it up. It looks like it could be a mind-trip worthy of the Cure song. So far this chick Charlotte wakes up and her surroundings are different and everyone is calling her a different name. (27)

Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk

I've almost finished this book and I've done it exclusively at Barnes and Noble. Normally I feel that movies and books should separate themselves and take liberties from each other. This book, however, is remarkably similar to the movie and they're both superb. (140)

Groovitude: A Get Fuzzy Treasure by Darby Conley

Get Fuzzy is this millenium's Garfield. I think it might be on my top-five comic strips ever list. (216)

The Complete Peanuts: 1950-1952 by Charles Schultz

I've always loved Peanuts more than everybody else because I've realized that I don't laugh because it's funny. I laugh because it's tragic. These early ones are actually even darker than the ones I think everyone's used to. The very first Peanuts strip is composed of a kid sitting with a girl and they both witness Charlie Brown walk by. The kid says to her, "There goes Charlie Brown... HOW I HATE HIM!" (179)

Pledged: The Secret Life of Sororities by Alexandra Robbins

Now this is Freaky stuff! Some woman posed as a college freshman, infiltrating a couple of sororities and exposed them! You know all those stereotypes about sororities? They're way truer than you think -- at least according to Ms. Robbins. (99)

Wild Animus by Rich Shapero

Somebody handed me this book on the way out of the Cure show as part of some kind of pre-sell promotion. So far it doesn't seem all that great. (7)

Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends & Other Realities of Adolescence by Rosalind Wiseman

This is the book that Tina Fey supposedly used as her source for Mean Girls. I'm surprised the book and movie are even connected. It's actually not a novel, but a how-to book. From what I've read, it seems like it's a great tool for parents to use to think they know what's up with their kids. (5)

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Yeah, I just read the first chapter. Hopefully I'll finish it. I just want to read it so I can tell all the girls I know that indeed I have read it and it's not as great as they think. (3)

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

I've only read the first chapter of this one too, but it rocks! I thought it would be all smutty, but it seems to have a little class to its smut. (9)

Blender

My music magazine of choice. I'm always reading it. Every word. Every picture. Because of it, I got into Nellie McKay. Even though Maxim publishes it, it's not really very sleazy. (129)

The Book of Mormon

I lost count how many times I've read this. Of course I officially lost count at three or four, so I may not have actually read it as much as it sounds. It's like scripture to me. I guess I mean that literally. (410)
