sixteen candles is probably the only movie that can watch once, rewind the tape and then watch it completely over again without getting bored. i love teen movies and sixteen candles is the paradigm of just about all of them. now every teen movie has the love triangle, the dance scene and the party at some popular guy's house. sixteen candles also includes the added bonus of the humiliating high school bus sequence. somehow with the exaggerated characterizations of geeks, jocks and brats a very fun and sensitive story comes out. |

# seven star trek ii the wrath of khan |
like i said for empire strikes back about star wars, i'm not some huge weird star trek fan. like the empire strikes back i think that wrath of khan holds its own as a really spectacular movie apart from its being a part of huge series often associated with geekdom. this flick has fabulous lines that involve life, death, age and rebirth. plus as i always say, a great movie depends on the antagonist. ricardo montalban does it fabulously in the title role. star trek ii goes alongside amadeus and last of the mohicans for great movies made even greater by music that perfectly compliments what's on the screen. btw it's kirstie alley's first flick. |
i've always had a hard time believing that fargo is considered the coen brothers' big masterpiece. why hasn't anybody used nick cage in something as funny as this since? this one is a true gem kept from most of the populace. great voice-over narration and general dialogue. stuff you for sure must see: the chase with the huggies and the final line of the flick. |
# eight raising arizona |
maybe this is just a throwback to my glorious youth spent in total fascination to the greatest toys ever. truth is when this came out i refused to see it considering i heard that optimus prime died. i finally love it now that i realize that prime never was much of a role model for me. i think i mostly related to the decepticons. i really love the slow industrial soundtrack inbetween the mega-cheesy butt rock ballads. plus, how can you stay away from a movie where the main villian eats planets? |

# ten raiders of the lost ark |
i've made it no secret that i like comic books. the original raiders of the lost ark has something beyond other movies in that it has the over the top feel of a comic book, but it's not cheesy. the villians are blatantly sinister, the heroine is far out emotional and the hero... the hero is indiana jones- a dude with a low set fedora who uses a whip to do housework and has his own heroic theme music. on the street in the real world we'd chuckle at a guy who's so intense, but in this movie we embrace his heroics. not only is he a great character but his world is filled with weird mysticism and guys whose heads melt. |
