three
in nineteen ninety-nine two huge
sci-fi movies hit the screen: phantom menace and the matrix. although
it did very well at the box office, the matrix didn't do as well as star
wars (obviously), but here in the next century it's the matrix that everyone's
trying to emulate in film, not star wars. the matrix never relied exclusively
on one type of special effect to make it incredible. instead it seamlessly
employs a number of things besides computer animation. the story is definately
a trip and the villian, mr. smith, pure a.i. evil.

i love scary movies, but i've been a bit hard to scare lately. the shining scared me silly the first five times i saw it. it's a different type of scary: an overall eeriness instead of suddenly in your face (and those freaky little girls-- brrrr). this is my third film on this list from the year nineteen eighty. |

the fifth element actually reminds me a lot of flash gordon. it gets funnier and more enjoyable every time i watch it. chris tucker is hilarious and bruce willis is in fine form as superstud veteran space cowboy. the best thing about the movie is timing. watch how noticeable some of the editing is when the action is taking place at different places at once. it's actually pretty cool. |

this movie is one of those weird gems that i recall being disappointed in when it first came out. for some reason parts that weren't considered clever before are now very classic (steve martin doing the bird calls on the wall, martin short describing the airplane, chevy chase serenading the local honey etc). this movie also has my all time favorite movie comedy moment when steve martin swings into action to run his body into the ground. |
